The Structure of the Tests
The overall structure of PTE Academic and IELTS Academic is broadly similar — both assess listening, reading, writing, and speaking. The biggest structural difference is that PTE is a single two-hour, fully computer-based test covering all four skills, while IELTS requires a separate face-to-face speaking session. The order of skills, timing, and task organization also differs between the two.

Task Types
What Each Test Actually Asks You to Do Intro: While the tasks look different on the surface, both tests are often assessing the same underlying skill. Here’s how they compare.
Writing
The essay tasks in PTE and IELTS are very similar, so little needs to change in how you prepare for that part. The real difference is in the other writing task — PTE asks you to summarize a written passage in a single sentence, while IELTS asks you to describe or summarize a chart or graph.

PTE's
task tests much the same ability as IELTS’s chart-description writing task. The biggest practical difference is format: PTE speaking is computer-based and machine-scored, while IELTS speaking is a face-to-face interview with a human examiner — often on a separate day.

Reading
PTE reading uses more, shorter texts with just one question each — so if you’re unsure about one passage, you can move on without it costing you the whole section. IELTS uses fewer, longer texts with multiple questions per passage.
